It was on June 20th, 1922, that a group of 25 Army officers got together at the historic Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, and the decision was made to insure each other’s motor vehicles. This meeting rose out of the frustration of trying to find affordable insurance because military officers were always on the move, and they were perceived as a poor risk by established insurance companies at that time.

The company they formed, originally the United States Army Automobile Insurance Association, eventually became the United Services Automobile Association in 1924, and has grown to serve millions of valued members in the military community.
The core values of the founders of USAA were service, loyalty, honesty and integrity.
USAA describes itself as a diversified financial services group of companies, among the leading providers of insurance, investments and banking products to members of the U.S. military, veterans who have honorably served and their families.
Today, USAA is a Fortune 500 company, and specializes in Property and Casualty Insurance, Life Insurance and Annuities, Investments, Banking, Shopping and Discounts, and offers benefits, products and discounts for U.S. military members and their spouses, as well as children of USAA members.
Their headquarters are located 12 miles northwest of San Antonio at 9800 Fredericksburg Road. It is situated on a campus-like 286 acre property that was a former horse farm.
