An historic ceremony and a Riverwalk interview for a U.S. President

It was 1992, and San Antonio was in the national spotlight 30 years ago when President George H. W Bush was in town for a major signing and a Larry King interview on the Arneson River Theater stage.

The day began when President Bush, along with his counterparts from Canada, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and the Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, were present for the final initialing ceremony of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in the shady plaza of the German-English School on South Alamo Street near Hemisfair Plaza.

That night, President Bush’s appearance on the Larry King Show was only days before the first Presidential debate in St. Louis. The San Antonio Riverwalk was the center of the action as the show was broadcast across the nation from the stage of the Arneson River Theater. It was the first time a president has taken calls on television since Jimmy Carter did so in 1977.
